Park City's Gallery Scene

Park City's art world is shaped by the collision of two different collector communities: the ski resort visitors who bring sophisticated tastes and significant purchasing power to Main Street's galleries during the winter season, and the Sundance Film Festival crowd, filmmakers, actors, producers, and entertainment industry figures, who descend each January and bring with them a particular interest in photography, portraiture, and contemporary practice. The Kimball Art Center, housed in a handsome building on Main Street, is the nonprofit anchor of the city's art scene, presenting rotating exhibitions of contemporary art, running community education programs, and producing the Kimball Arts Festival, which brings hundreds of artists and tens of thousands of visitors to Park City each August for one of the most prestigious outdoor art fairs in the Mountain West. Commercial galleries along Main Street represent artists working in realist and impressionist painting traditions, Western bronze sculpture, contemporary abstraction, and fine art glass. The town's gallery scene operates on a seasonal calendar driven by ski season and festival programming, with the highest concentration of openings and events between December and March and in July and August.
