San Diego Museum of Art

The San Diego Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the San Diego region and one of the most significant art institutions in Southern California, with a collection of more than 20,000 works spanning 5,000 years of art history housed in a landmark Spanish Colonial Revival building in Balboa Park. Founded in 1926, the museum occupies the most beautiful museum campus in the American West: Balboa Park's Prado complex, a collection of Spanish Colonial Revival buildings constructed for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition that represents the most intact example of that architectural style anywhere in the country.

The collection's greatest strengths are in Spanish painting from the medieval period through the 19th century, a depth that reflects San Diego's Spanish colonial heritage and distinguishes the museum from most American encyclopedic institutions. The holdings include major works by El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo, and Goya, making the Spanish galleries one of the finest outside of Spain and a resource of genuine scholarly importance. The museum's Balboa Park location places it within walking distance of the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Museum of Man (now the Museum of Us), the Museum of Photographic Arts, and more than a dozen other institutions in a cultural park that represents one of the most concentrated museum complexes in the United States. The nearby Timken Museum of Art, also in Balboa Park, holds a small but distinguished collection of European old masters and Russian icons that complements the San Diego Museum of Art's holdings.
