Art in the San Juan Mountains

Pagosa Springs sits at 7,100 feet at the confluence of the San Juan River and the Piedra River, surrounded by the extraordinary alpine scenery of the San Juan Mountains. The town's name comes from the Ute word for "healing waters," a reference to the Great Pagosa Hot Springs, which emerge from one of the world's deepest geothermal springs and have drawn visitors for centuries. The area's beauty, dramatic mountain peaks, aspen-covered hillsides, and the San Juan River winding through town, has attracted painters and photographers who work in the plein air tradition that flourishes throughout the mountain West. The town's galleries serve both local residents and the substantial tourist traffic generated by the hot springs resort and the nearby Wolf Creek Ski Area. The proximity of the Ancestral Puebloan sites of the San Juan Basin, including Chimney Rock National Monument just to the east, gives Pagosa Springs' art scene a connection to the deep Indigenous artistic heritage of the Four Corners region.
