Clyfford Still Museum
Golden Triangle · Denver, Colorado
The Clyfford Still Museum is one of the most remarkable single-artist museums in the world, holding 94 percent of Still's lifetime artistic output — an extraordinary condition stipulated by the artist in his will, which required his estate to remain intact until an American city would build a dedicated museum. Denver won that honor, and Brad Cloepfil's purpose-built museum, opened in 2011, presents Still's monumental Abstract Expressionist canvases in galleries designed specifically for them. The collection traces the full arc of Still's career from early figurative work through the mature paintings that made him one of the most radical voices in American modernism.
