Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Old Town Scottsdale · Scottsdale, Arizona
SMoCA - the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art - has anchored the city's engagement with contemporary art, architecture, and design since opening in 1999 in a striking building designed by Will Bruder that incorporates the bones of an earlier cinema into a structure of considerable spatial drama. The exhibition program is ambitious and wide-ranging, presenting solo and group shows of contemporary significance alongside thoughtful explorations of architecture and design. The James Turrell Skyspace installed on the building's rooftop - one of the artist's signature contemplative environments - has become one of the most visited art experiences in Arizona. Admission is free on Thursday evenings, making SMoCA accessible to a broad Phoenix-area audience.
