The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA)

Downtown Los Angeles · Los Angeles, California

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles was the first institution in the city dedicated exclusively to art created after 1940, and it remains the anchor of LA's downtown cultural district. MOCA's collection traces the full arc of postwar art from Abstract Expressionism through Minimalism, Arte Povera, and the conceptual experiments of the 1970s to the present moment. The main Grand Avenue building, designed by Arata Isozaki, is complemented by the Geffen Contemporary — a vast converted warehouse in Little Tokyo ideal for large-scale installation art. Together the two spaces constitute one of the essential contemporary art experiences in the United States.
