Chinati Foundation

The Chinati Foundation is one of the most significant art institutions in the United States and one of the essential experiences in the American Southwest, a vast complex of permanent large-scale installations by Donald Judd and a distinguished group of artists he invited to realize works in the landscape of the Chihuahuan Desert. Located on the grounds of a former US Army fort on the edge of Marfa, Texas, the foundation was established by Judd in 1979 and opened to the public in 1986, fulfilling his vision of a place where art of genuine ambition could be permanently installed in spaces and conditions commensurate with its scale and seriousness.

The centerpiece of the collection is Judd's own installation of 100 milled aluminum works, identical in external dimensions but each unique in interior configuration, permanently installed in two former artillery sheds whose concrete and glass construction Judd redesigned to filter the West Texas light with extraordinary care. The works change throughout the day as the light shifts, and no reproduction can adequately represent the experience of moving among them over several hours. Equally significant are Dan Flavin's installation of fluorescent light works in six former barracks buildings, John Chamberlain's crushed automobile sculptures in a former wool warehouse, and works by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Roni Horn, Ingrid Rein, and Richard Long installed throughout the grounds.

The foundation requires advance reservation for tours, which typically run on Thursday through Sunday mornings and represent the only way to access the installations. The tour is a significant time commitment, lasting several hours, and the experience is transformative for visitors willing to give it that time. Marfa's broader art world, which has grown up around the Chinati Foundation over four decades and now includes Ballroom Marfa, the Judd Foundation's own properties, and a constellation of independent galleries and project spaces, makes the town worth a longer stay. The Chinati Foundation Open House weekend each October is the most concentrated occasion on the calendar, drawing the international art world to the Chihuahuan Desert for two days of public programming and access to works not normally on view.
