Harwood Museum of Art
Ledoux Street · Taos, New Mexico
The Harwood Museum of Art is the second-oldest art museum in New Mexico, with a permanent collection that spans the full history of art in Taos - from the founding generation of the Taos Society of Artists through the modernist experiments of the 1920s and 1930s to the diverse contemporary artists working in the valley today. The museum's Agnes Martin Gallery, housing seven large paintings donated by the artist who spent the last decades of her life in nearby Taos, is one of the most serene and powerful gallery experiences in the American Southwest. The Harwood's deep integration with the Taos community - through education programs, community exhibitions, and its role as keeper of the town's artistic memory - makes it far more than a repository of historical objects.
