Taos Art Museum at Fechin House
Kit Carson Road · Taos, New Mexico
The Taos Art Museum at Fechin House is housed in one of the most extraordinary buildings in the American Southwest - the hand-carved wooden house and studio created by Russian artist Nicolai Fechin after his arrival in Taos in 1927. Fechin's intricate carved woodwork - covering doors, beams, cabinets, and architectural details in a style fusing Russian folk art with the kiva architecture of the Taos Pueblo - is itself a major artwork of unparalleled ambition and craftsmanship. The museum presents paintings by the founders of the Taos Society of Artists alongside works by Fechin himself, whose bold, painterly portraits represent some of the most technically brilliant works produced in New Mexico during the early twentieth century.
